Eco-design at Roche Bobois

With the increased awareness of human impact on the environment, new approaches to creation and quality have been developed. To respect both the environment and our customers, Roche Bobois has always believed that eco-design should be an integral part of these two concepts - a product is only creative and high-quality if it is also environmentally friendly. Therefore, we make every effort to ensure that new products, as well as those already included in our collections, are improved to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

To do this, we developed our own qualitative assessment tool in 2012, named Eco6. This software was based on six criteria relating the different stages of the life cycle for a particular product. It highlighted the environmental impacts of our products and allowed us to focus on how to reduce them. More than 150 of our products were screened using this tool.

In 2015, in collaboration with the FCBA, it was redeveloped to become ECO8. It is now based on four stages of the life cycle, each analysed by two criteria.

ECO8, 4 stages of the life cycle, 8 criteria:

  1. 1 Stage 1: Material profile
    Criteria: Structure & Upholstery
    • The environmental profile of the materials used for the structure and their mass contribution (sustainable resources, recycled or recyclable materials, etc.)
    • The environmental profile of the materials used for the upholstery and their mass contribution (sustainable resources, recycled or recyclable materials, etc.)
  2. 2 Stage 2: Manufacturing
    Criteria: Finishes & Environmental Management
    • Glues and finishes (stains, varnishes, etc.)
    • Environmental approaches implemented by our workshops, such as the ISO 14001 certification on environmental management and using certified wood from sustainably managed forests
  3. 3 Stage 3: Use
    Criteria: Durability & Consumption
    • The product’s durability
    • The type of lighting and the electrical performance of the product’s light source (using LEDs, energy performance, etc.)
  4. 4 Stage 4: End of life
Criteria: Number of materials & Separability
    • The number of different materials used (less materials reduces the different methods for end of life reprocessing)
    • The separability of the materials used (total or partial, allowing easier end of life reprocessing)

Each of the 8 criteria is rated from 1 to 4. An average is then determined.

Internally, we consider a product to be eco-designed when it has a rating greater than or equal to 3.
On our website, all products that have been determined to be “eco-designed” feature this image:

Other efforts:

  • Reducing VOC emissions in the atmosphere:
    - Using natural finishes for certain collections (using oils or waxes instead of polyurethane varnishes)
    - Gradually increasing the use of CARB certified panels (the most demanding formaldehyde release standard)

  • Obtaining standards and certifications in our workshops:
    - ISO 14001 for environmental management (53% of our sales from the Contemporains collection use this standard)
    - ISO 9001 for quality management
    - OHSAS 18001 for occupational health and safety management
    - FSC/PEFC for wood from sustainably managed forests; we gradually increase the proportion of products made from panels and solid woods that meet these certifications

  • Implementing an eco-design guide for our designers and workshops to systematise environmentally friendly practices in product development; increasing the use of ECO8 as an assessment tool

  • Recycling:

    - - With the 2013 implementation in France of the Responsabilité Elargie du Producteur (REP) for the furniture industry, furniture now has a collection process for recycling. This is why eco-participation is now indicated in addition to the sale price. This eco-participation fee is transferred entirely to Eco-Mobilier, the organisation in charge of collecting and recycling the recovered products.

In general, all furniture is recyclable. We encourage you to dispose of them in the designated Eco-Mobilier bins at waste processing centres.

At Roche Bobois, we provide a service to remove your old furniture when any new orders are made. This allows us to transport the old furniture directly to the appropriate recycling programs.

    - In other countries, all furniture is recyclable and more valuable components can be recovered. In order to preserve the environment, we encourage you to inquire about the recycling methods in your own location.
